During my second practicum placement in a Grade 6/7 split classroom, I took on a significantly expanded teaching load, designing and delivering comprehensive units tailored to a dynamic, collaborative group of learners. In Mathematics, I led instruction across key strand areas, guiding students through operations with fractions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) as well as spatial reasoning concepts, including finding the area and perimeter of rectangles, triangles, and complex polygons. In Language, I designed and taught an engaging unit on poetry, fostering creative expression and critical analysis. Additionally, I facilitated Social Studies, exploring global connections and helping students develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. Navigating the unique interplay of a split-grade classroom strengthened my ability to differentiate instruction, manage multi-level learning goals, and build a cohesive, supportive classroom community.
